DON’T Make These Mistakes in Your Bathroom Remodel

26th Nov 2024

It’s a great day when you’re finally ready to remodel an outdated bathroom. But don’t let your dream bathroom turn into a nightmare due to costly, inconvenient, or unsightly errors. To help your renovation go more smoothly, we’ll highlight some faux pas that you’ll want to steer clear of as you update your space.

1. Not having your primary bathroom adjoin the bedroom.

Sometimes certain sacrifices are needed when remodeling. Maybe you’re moving into a bigger room as your bedroom, a room without an ensuite bathroom. Or you might be considering reconfiguring your space in a way that will make the primary bathroom and bedroom no longer connect. However, this is not a sacrifice worth making. It will be highly annoying to have to move through a common area of the house to get from your bedroom to your bathroom. These two private areas should connect for your convenience and comfort.

2. Ordering mismatched shower hardware.

There are a few pitfalls to avoid when ordering hardware for a new glass shower. For one thing, fasteners like clamps and hinges generally come with either a square or beveled profile. You’ll want to choose the same edge style for all the metal components on your shower enclosure, so be sure to note this detail when comparing products. When deciding between beveled or square edges, it can be helpful to know that square edges have a more contemporary vibe while a beveled profile looks more traditional.

3. Having the shower curb level or slanted toward the bathroom floor.

When overseeing a bathroom remodel, one important task is making sure the various tradespersons communicate with each other. Or if you’re doing the work yourself, you’ll want to think about how one fixture will impact another. In this case, the slope of the shower curb will determine the shower enclosure’s ability to contain water. Be sure that it slants slightly toward the shower floor so that any water pooling on the curb flows back into the enclosure and not onto your bathroom floor.

4. Using metals that “almost” match.

Nowadays, it’s perfectly acceptable to use contrasting metals in one room. You just want to sprinkle each throughout the space rather than clustering them. However, if you use finishes that are close but noticeably different, this can look like a failed attempt to coordinate. For example, you wouldn’t want to use a polished chrome pull handle – see example here– on a glass shower with a brushed nickel towel bar – click to see an example. While the difference may not be glaring in a website photo, it is noticeable in person. Check the finish of each item before placing your order, and keep in mind that finishes with similar names can have have very different appearances. This is true of brushed bronze and oil-rubbed bronze, for example.
