Small Bathroom Design and Decor Tips

3rd Sep 2024

A small bathroom doesn’t have to be short on style! In fact, there are even ways to make a tiny space look larger than it is. With a remodel – or even just a makeover – your little bathroom can go from being an annoying room that you only enter when you have to, to being one of your favorite spaces!

Consider a Cool Color Palette with Cozy Accents

Choosing cool metal tones and calming colors can visually expand a bathroom. Going this route, you might pick chrome or brushed nickel as the finish for your shower hardware. These silvery hues bring down the room’s color temperature, contributing to the cool and refreshing vibe. Opt for pale neutrals or pastels for:

  • wall paint
  • window treatments
  • floor covering

  • When using these shades, there is a risk of the room becoming cold and sterile, though. To counteract this, add cozy elements. Possibilities include:

  • a warm finish like brushed bronze or satin brass for some accent items
  • a potted plant or vase that you keep filled with fresh flowers
  • extra plush towels and/or bath mat
  • natural wood on the vanity or other fixtures

  • Harness the Power of Clear Glass

Replacing opaque or translucent items with transparent glass is a wonderful way to optimize your room’s available space. Examples include:

  • Replace your shower curtain with a space-friendly frameless sliding shower door system like this.
  • Use clear glass shelves on metal brackets for storing items neatly and stylishly.
  • Update your vanity with clear cabinet glass and new handles and hardware.

  • Just making the switch from a shower curtain to clear glass will make a huge difference. Suddenly, the space that was once hidden behind the curtain will be visibly included when you walk into the bathroom. As an added bonus, this also makes the shower area itself feel roomier when you are using it.

    Decorate with Mirrors

Most likely, your bathroom already has a vanity mirror, but you may wish to upgrade this or add more mirrors. For example, a vanity mirror that extends all the way to the ceiling can make the ceilings seem higher. You could even cover an entire wall of a powder room with reflective glass to make the space look twice as wide as it really is. If you prefer to keep your existing vanity mirror in place, hang an assortment of other mirrors around it to form a gallery wall that adds brilliance and the impression of depth to the room.

    Use Light Wisely

If your small bathroom has a window, maximize this by keeping the curtain open whenever possible. You may prefer to add privacy film to the window glass and remove the blinds or curtains, which can also visually “open up” the space. In terms of electric lighting, here a few things to think about.

  • Suit the brightness of the lights to the size of the space. Overly bright bulbs in a tiny bathroom can be off-putting and stress-inducing.
  • Include a couple light sources. For example, in addition to the main overhead light you could have sconces beside the vanity mirror or a small lamp on the counter.
  • Make the lights decorative. You don’t have a lot of space for knick-knacks in a small bathroom, so choose each light fixture wisely and ensure that it enhances the room’s theme and vibe.
