Featured Shower: A Custom Glass Steam Enclosure

Featured Shower: A Custom Glass Steam Enclosure

16th Jul 2024

This week we feature a lovely glass steam enclosure made from clear glass and polished nickel hardware. You will notice its features common to all glass steam showers:

  • The enclosure is equipped with a steam kit.
  • The shower stall is fully enclosed from top to bottom so that it can trap steam.
  • A movable transom is included for steam release and control of humidity.
  • All interior surfaces are covered with glass or tile – materials that can withstand warmth and moisture.
  • Next, we will look at specific characteristics of this featured shower enclosure.

    Frameless Glass Shower Clamps

Showers of old relied on aluminum framing, but modern frameless enclosures are constructed using hinges, caulk joints, and clamps. Glass shower hinges and clamps can have square or beveled edges. For many, the beveled profile is considered more traditional and the square profile more modern. The featured enclosure has square edges in keeping with its clean lines and contemporary vibe.

This enclosure also has glass to glass pivotable transom clamps . Some type of operable transom clamp is needed on any steam enclosure. The transom is a small glass panel that can be opened and closed.
When open, it allows steam to escape and reduces the humidity within the stall. The transom can be adjusted to provide a wider or more narrow opening as desired.

Tubular Back to Back Shower Door Pulls

A glass shower’s door handle helps to define its style. The featured shower is equipped with a handle in a very popular style – see example here – the tubular pull. This piece of hardware is made from tubular metal and forms an ergonomic handle. On the featured shower, a back to back set of pull handles is used, with matching pulls on the inside and outside of the door panel. The simplicity and sleek design of this pull means that it will match with many bathroom decorating styles.

    Glass Shower Door Hinges

There are three distinct types of shower door hinges, and it is important to keep this in mind when ordering.

  • Pivot Hinges – These attach the door panel to surfaces above and below it. The hinges thus provide a pivot point from which the door swings open and closed.
  • Wall to Glass Hinges – In some glass shower designs, the door panel is hinged to an adjacent tiled wall. Wall to glass hinges (click here for example) are used for this application. You can see that the lower door hinge on the featured shower is a wall to glass hinge.
  • Glass to Glass Hinges – In other cases, the door panel is hinged to an adjoining piece of fixed glass, and so 180 degree glass to glass hinges are used. The upper hinge on the featured shower is this kind of hinge.
  • On this enclosure, the hinges have square edges in harmony with the square profile on the clamps.
