Give Your Boring or Dated Bathroom a Boho Makeover

Give Your Boring or Dated Bathroom a Boho Makeover

17th Jul 2025

Uninspired by your primary bathroom? Decorilla identifies bohemian design as “a continuous hot and trending style. The free-spirit animal of interior design styles…” Sounds like just the ticket for a bathroom in need of some updated charm, right? Whether your bathroom is out of date, too minimalist, or just plain ugly, boho is a design style that can improve and transform it. As The Spruce points out, “[I}t doesn't matter what your actual bathroom looks like — it's all about the accessories.” In fact, given the eclectic nature of this décor mode, you can even work your bathroom’s quirks into the design and have fun with its imperfections.

Add a Variety of Colorful Patterns

Bohemian design is very much a mix-n-match affair, much different from the monochromatic or matchy-matchy decorating that was popular in the past. Bring in one or more colorful patterns to give the space visual interest and boho vibes. Possibilities include:

  • Re-tiling the shower walls and including some handpainted or otherwise patterned tiles. Don’t hide this behind a shower curtain – choose a clear glass sliding shower door that will give you the same space-efficiency while showing off the new tile.
  • Window treatments and rugs open up more possibilities for introducing bohemian patterns.
  • If you’re looking for something less expensive, bargain shop for a few bold and vivid hand towels to drape on towel bars or over the sides of baskets and bins.
  • Cover one wall with whimsical peel-n-stick wall paper.

Bring in Wood and Warm Metals

The Spruce article on boho bathrooms also suggests loading up on wood and warm metal finishes. If you have a cool metallic like polished chrome (see example here), this is not exactly bohemian material, but you don’t need to replace all of it. Simply swap out a few key items for pieces in a gold based finish like satin brass or brushed bronze. For instance, on a hinged or rolling shower door, there is probably a pull handle or knob. As long as the new product is suitable for your glass thickness and the holes already drilled in the glass, you can replace it with a brass or bronze option with more character, such as this. Options for adding wood include:

  • buying a bamboo bath mat
  • sanding a painted vanity and refinishing it with lacquer
  • installing wooden shelves
  • hanging boho prints in wood frames

Decorate with Plants and Macrame

Green plants and macrame wall hangings and hanging plant holders are hallmarks of boho design. It should be fairly easy to add items that hang from the ceiling or lay flat against the wall, but what if you don’t have room for other potted plants? You can add surfaces to your bathrom while keeping an open feel by putting in glass wall shelves on satin brass clamps. Feel free to load these up with plants and decorative or glitzy pieces (within the shelves’ weight restrictions, of course) since more is more in boho design!
