Shower Enclosure Feature: Clear Glass, Hinged Door
4th Feb 2025
This week’s featured shower highlights some popular design choices for the hardware as well as the glass. Could a design like this be right for your space? We’ll take a close look at the components and design choices that come together to create this lovely glass shower stall. If you’re planning a glass shower install, this overview can help you clarify your own custom design and give you an idea of the hardware you’ll need.
Layout and Glass Style
In many bathrooms a corner shower makes the most sense. This configuration is built out from two existing walls to form a fully enclosed stall. Since the featured bathroom is roomy, a large right angle enclosure was chosen. As you can see, each wall of the enclosure meets the other walls at ninety-degree angles, and one of the glass walls is comprised of a fixed panel beside a swinging door – an in-line door and panel configuration.
Clear glass is another key element of the highlighted shower. It allows you to see the entire shower area when you enter the bathroom, thereby making the space feel as large as possible. Transparent glass also keeps the atmosphere bright and open when you are using the shower stall. Finally, clear glass is versatile, coordinating with most decorating styles and every color scheme.
Fixed Glass Hardware
As you can see, this corner shower has two pieces of stationary glass. The one next to the door is notched to accommodate the half-wall, and the other extends up from the half-wall to complete the enclosure. Since this is a frameless design small clamps are the primary fasteners for the fixed glass. A beveled profile – like you see here – provides a classic look. The header around the top of the stall provides additional rigidity and structural support. Using a header allows for slightly thinner glass, which can bring down the price of the project. The chrome hardware finish you see here is timeless and pairs well with the bathroom’s other traditional elements.
Door Panel Hardware
While the beveled edges mentioned above are more traditional, pivot hinges on the door panel add a modern twist, giving the enclosure a transitional vibe overall. Instead of attaching the door to the wall beside it like wall mount hinges would, these contemporary fasteners form a pivot point between the header and floor from which the door swings open and shut. A set of back to back ladder handles also gives the door character and charm. This homeowner opted for a monochromatic approach to the bathroom hardware finish, so all the hardware inside and outside the glass is the same tone.
Are You Considering a Glass Shower Project?
This featured shower provides a helpful overview of the metal components needed for a frameless hinged door enclosure. These may include:
- clamps
- hinges
- handle
- header
There are additional pieces of hardware that some like to include such as robe hooks and towel bars installed on the glass. You can also opt for a frameless sliding door system like one of these if space efficiency is a concern.
