Glass Shower Design and Decor Tips
4th Mar 2025
Since a glass shower is a large fixture, it’s hard to overstate its impact on the room’s ambiance. Designing and decorating the perfect enclosure is a key aspect of a remodel or new build. Use our tips to get the creative juices flowing as you plan out your dream shower!
Prioritize Accessibility
The accessibility of a shower area is always relevant, especially if you plan to age in place or if a family member has a high fall risk. Design options to consider include:
- Curbless threshold
- Walk-in shower (no door panel, open entrance)
- Shower screen/Splash panel
- French doors to allow for a wide entryway
- Ergonomic door handle
Consider Door Type Carefully
Showers can be equipped with various types of doors. Some swing on hinges, while others pivot from a point formed by upper and lower hinges. On the other hand, there are sliding doors that move along a header on rollers as well as bypass doors that glide in tracks. In many bathrooms, any and all of these door types are feasible. However, if there is not a lot of open floor space around the shower entrance, there may not be room for a swinging or pivoting door to open freely. In a situation like this, go with a frameless slider or set of bypass doors instead.
Treat the Shower Stall Like a Little Room
In terms of décor, the shower’s interior should be decorated as thoughtfully as any other space. Give it a color palette that matches or coordinates with the surrounding bathroom. The shower stall will be home to necessities like shampoo and body wash. Transfer these to matching bottles and arrange all items in tasteful clusters. Ensure that there is plenty of storage by adding pieces such as shelves, a stool, or robe hooks. Finally, try to incorporate one or two decorative items to boost the stall’s aesthetic appeal. Possibilities include a plant or a seashell.
Appeal to the Senses
In decorating a shower and bathroom, try to appeal to senses beyond sight. For smell, you could purchase and install an aromatherapy kit on the shower head. Hearing can be appealed to with an in-shower speaker and a quiet exhaust fan. Consider the sense of touch in choosing a shower head with various settings as well as the type of towels to hang near the shower – terrycloth, Turkish cotton, or linen. Even for sight, you can think beyond the usual by adding a dimmer switch or a LED-lit shower head.
Try a New Trend or Style
The shower is also a wonderful space in which to introduce a fresh trend. Possibilities include:
- Different hardware finishes within one space (Mixed metals)
- Large format stone wall tiles
- Arches and rounded corners
- Biophilic design that celebrates items from nature
- Warm gold based metallics such as brushed bronze or satin brass
